Group Counsellor

Anyika Best

Anyika has over 10 years of experience working with young children and youth. She has worked at a Residential Treatment Facility in Louisville, Kentucky, USA, which catered to the mental health needs of youth who had experienced various forms of abuse and neglect. With her help, many of these youth were discharged from the program to foster placements, back to family members, or to independent living programs.

Anyika’s formal preparation for the health profession began with her being a part of the Magnet Program for Early Childhood Education at Waggener Traditional High School, in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. She received practical instruction from the preschool teachers while working with the children.

She later earned her Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education from Jefferson Community and Technical College (JCTC) USA, and was a teacher’s assistant at a preschool connected to JCTC. She continue studies at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, USA, where she earned both a Bachelor's Degree and a Master's Degree in Social Work.

In addition to Anyika's tertiary education, she has participated in educational activities and programs such as the Adolescent and Young Mother's Program (AYMP) facilitated by The Barbados Family Planning Association. During this 10 month program, she planned and led individual and group counselling sessions. By the end of the program many of the participants had secured job opportunities.

Anyika has served as a counsellor for a Youth and Entrepreneurship Leadership and Personal Development Program, a summer program developed and organized by Dr. Jaggernaught, a Professor at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.

As a current Counsellor at Bright Life Family Centre, Anyika leads the Single Parent Support Group. She plans activities, facilitates discussion of topics such as effective techniques to work with children of various ages, and provides individual counselling. Being passionate about the work she does has led Anyika to develop the resilience she aims to inspire in her clients.
